THE ARTISTS

Tortuga is home to up to 20 artists in residence and has 15 working studio spaces, two lockup tool stores and communal workspaces. The space is delineated into three areas, the Gallery, the Granite Shop and the Sweatshop.

The work of our artists has been included in exhibitions, shows, festivals and underground events internationally, nationally and on the local scene. Tortuga is proud to support, and be supported by, its artists.

Tortuga is involved with a number of events throughout the year. As an independent artist-run space we pride ourselves on our involvement in ART MONTH, The Sydney Fringe, MOST, Underbelly, community festivals, other artist-run spaces and countless events, both glossy high-end affairs and the ripe fruit of Sydney’s pulsing underground.

Chris Fox is an established sculptor whose practice investigates the extension of site through notional programmed structures. Large, architecturally scaled interventions and sculptural projects test the boundaries of the built form through materials and constructions that speak of a potential paralleling function, of a parallel and poetic potentiality beside a more conventional functionalism.35_MotherOfInvention 10 Fox designs, builds, engineers, fabricates and installs works, often engaging and leading teams of engineers, builders, artisans and other specialist. Extensive experience in utilising numerous materials for his sculptural projects, as well as working in the architecture and construction industries, means that Fox has a wealth of construction, material and artistic knowledge. info:
Zeke: master of interplanetary portraiture and extra terrestrial culture whore. A child of 21st century consumer culture, Zeke explores science fiction, sex and the bizarre through ‘Zeke’s Lunchbox’. Her sickly-sweet imagery and use of colour seduces the viewer, offering an invitation into a world dominated by darker undertones of obsession.Influenced by kitsch and space age, Zeke extrapolates ideas and imagery from everything B-grade. The work is triggered by schlock artists and draws inspiration from illustrators of Goosebumps and The Garbage Pail Kids. A bowerbird of pop culture, Zeke creates a glittering assemblage of excess, overwhelming yet carefully balanced in composition, content and colour.

Photography
close
info:
Pirate Photography is the work of H Morgan-Harris and is the love child of a much-loved but slightly battered SLR camera and computer ‘pirating’, the manipulation of SLR images to carve out a new perception of the human form, or investing images with emotion and memory. The most recent series, Lost Species, deals with the emotion inherent within our perception of death. Native animal skulls sourced from all over Australia, are adorned with clinical ‘toe-tags’ that indicate where, how, why and when the animal died. This sterile environment is tempered by newspaper clips that instil a human emotion – by depicting the animals anthropomorphically the artists creates a space to consider the soul of the animal and within that how this makes us feel.
